"The community artists themselves remember their lives with the co-ordinators. They see those relationships as important, but the self-appointed authorities on Aboriginal art history often don't acknowledge that there's been a white person involved.

So profound is the interweaving of the indigenous painting movement with the influence of mainstream art advisers during the past two decades that it is almost a perversion of the record to underplay this hybrid aspect of the tradition. The influence is intriguing and it goes both ways. Indigenous artists pick up skills from their mainstream mentors while many art centre co-ordinators are themselves established artists and their works bear the impress of the Aboriginal communities where they have lived.”

Nicolas Rothwell, The Australian, April 18, 2009
